The BATNA Award

The BATNA Award

by Owen Fitzpatrick in Sales

Most of us have heard of the BAFTA Awards, but what I think is really relevant and important to learn about the the ‘BATNA’ award. This award is an award you can give yourself before you enter any negotiation to ensure that you do the best job possible.

BATNA stands for the Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement. Basically, it is a term that the most successful negotiators use to describe their worst case scenario in the event the negotiation breaks down. Whenever you walk into any kind of negotiation, it’s important to know what is your best alternative to the negotiation process. To be strong in your position, you must get to the stage of not needing what you are negotiating for. Knowing you can walk away frees you from need based choices that can negatively impact how successful you are in a negotiation.

Giving yourself the award of a BATNA means making sure before you go into a meeting, you are in a strong position and are clear that things will be okay regardless. This freedom lets you be at your best and get the best result possible.
