The Sales Personality

The Sales Personality

by Owen Fitzpatrick in Persuasion, Sales

Many people believe in the sales personality. They have the idea that a person is either a born salesperson or they are not. I can understand where they got this impression. To some people, sales seems to come so natural while others struggle massively in their efforts. So, is there a sales personality?

Well, the truth is that there is a mixture of issues at play when we talk about a salesperson. Like with any skill, part of it does come natural and part of it is learned. Like there are some natural golfers, there are some natural salespeople. But you can still learn to be a great salesperson if you learn and practice the skills involved. You don’t have a ‘golf’ gene as far as we know nor do you have a ‘sales’ gene. What you do have are certain predispositions genetically wired that makes you more likely to behave in certain ways conducive to effective selling.

In order to develop more of a sales personality, it’s a good idea to get an understanding of the main qualities that sales people seem to have. I have outlined ten of the more important qualities I have found in the best of the best.

1) Sociable: They like people, being around them and conversing with them.

2) Positive: They are generally optimistic that things will work out in their favor.

3) Fearless: They do not fear rejection, failure or embarrassment.

4) Emotionally Intelligent: They are able to understand other peoples emotions and exert decent control over their own emotions.

5) Passionate: They believe in what they sell and their passion for it is contagious.

6) Certain: They are convinced in their products benefits and sure of themselves and their skills.

7) Fascinated: They are intrigued by others and are interested in finding out what makes people tick.

8) Relentless: They do not stop until they achieve their goal.

9) Flexible: They are flexible and open to changing what they are doing if they are not getting the result they want.

10) Quick thinking: They are able to think on their feet and come up with the right answer at the right time.
