Hi there,
What’s the Story?
It’s finally time for some well-needed rest and to work on my books. One of the best ways for me to unwind is by reading and writing… in a nice place of course.
In this week’s episode of the Changing Minds Podcast, we explore the magic and potential of mindsets and the placebo effect. I uncover how and why they work, and share some amazing studies conducted on the power of belief. Check it out here: video.owenfitzpatrick.com

The Power of Your Mindset
Estimated reading time: 4 minutes 46 seconds
What if the way you think could help you burn more calories, handle stress better, and even transform your body’s response to challenges?
The concept of mindset has revolutionized our understanding of how beliefs and attitudes shape our experiences and outcomes.
This week’s newsletter dives deep into the fascinating world of mindset, drawing from the latest psychological and neuroscientific research.
By the end of this article, you’ll have practical strategies to harness the power of mindset in your life.
Defining Mindset
Your mindset encompasses your core beliefs and assumptions about various aspects of life, from food and exercise to stress and personal growth. These beliefs shape your expectations, explanations, and goals, influencing how you experience and respond to different situations.
Some of the key researchers involved in this area include Carol Dweck, Alia Crum, Ellen Langer, David Yeager, and Mary Murphy.
The Neuroscience of Mindset
Understanding the brain’s role in mindset is helpful. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for decision-making and self-control, works in conjunction with other brain areas to interpret experiences and shape responses.
Your mindset acts as a lens through which your brain processes and reacts to stimuli, influencing not only your psychological state but also your physiological responses.
Probably the best way I’ve heard the way mindset works is by Alia Crum when she said:
“The total effect of anything is a combined product of what you’re doing and what you think about what you’re doing.”
Your prefrontal cortex interacts with the rest of your brain and determines the meaning of your experiences.
Key Concepts in this Area of Study:
- Mindsets: sets of beliefs that you have about a variety of things that shape your expectations, explanations, and goals, influencing how you experience and respond to different situations.
- Placebo Effect: This effect demonstrates that believing in the efficacy of a treatment can lead to real improvements in health, even if the treatment is inert.
- Belief Effects: The expectations you hold about an experience can alter your experience. For example, believing that you’re getting enough exercise can enhance its benefits. Belief effects occur as a result of both mindsets you hold as well as the placebo effect.
Practical Applications of Mindset Research
To explore the true power of mindset, let’s examine some incredible research that demonstrates it.
1. Exercise and Health
One ground-breaking study by Alia Crum and Ellen Langer involved hotel housekeepers. When informed that their daily work met the criteria for exercise, these housekeepers showed significant improvements in weight, body fat, and blood pressure. This study highlights the powerful impact of simply believing in the health benefits of one’s activities.
2. Stress Management
Contrary to popular belief, stress isn’t inherently harmful. Research by Crum and others shows that viewing stress as beneficial can lead to better performance and health outcomes. This “stress-is-enhancing” mindset helps individuals leverage stress as a tool for growth and action, rather than seeing it as a debilitating force.
3. Food Perception
Another fascinating study involved participants consuming the same milkshake under different beliefs about its calorie content. Those who believed they were consuming a high-calorie shake experienced greater satiety, demonstrating how beliefs about food can influence physiological responses.
4. Sleep Quality
Research on placebo sleep effects found that individuals’ beliefs about their sleep quality can significantly impact their cognitive performance. Those who believed they had slept well performed better on cognitive tasks, regardless of the actual quality of their sleep.
Cultivating a Growth Mindset
Carol Dweck’s research on the growth mindset emphasizes that our abilities and intelligence can be developed by challenging ourselves, putting in effort, learning, feedback, and persistence.
This contrasts with a fixed mindset, where individuals believe their abilities are static and unchangeable.
Key Strategies to Develop a Growth Mindset
Here are some excellent ways to cultivate and nurture a growth mindset:
1. Embrace Challenges: View obstacles as opportunities to grow rather than threats to avoid.
2. Learn from Feedback: Use feedback as a tool for improvement, not as a judgment of your abilities.
3. Celebrate Effort: Recognize and reward the effort you put into tasks, not just the outcomes.
4. Focus on Progress: Track your development over time, appreciating how far you’ve come.
5. Encourage Others: Support and praise others for their efforts and improvements, fostering a growth-oriented environment.
Applying Mindset Shifts in Everyday Life
Let’s explore how you can start applying some of these ideas and insights to some real challenges you’re facing.
1. Reframe Stress
Start viewing stress as a sign that your body is preparing to tackle challenges. This mindset shift can help reduce the negative impacts of stress and enhance your performance.
2. Seek Feedback
Actively look for feedback and use it to guide your growth. This helps you become more resilient and adaptable.
3. Celebrate Effort and Progress
Acknowledge the hard work you put into your tasks and the progress you make. This positive reinforcement can motivate you to continue striving for improvement.
4. Challenge Yourself
Regularly push yourself out of your comfort zone. Taking on new challenges helps build resilience and a growth-oriented mindset.
5. Understand Your Mindset
Reflect on your current mindsets about different areas of your life. Are there any fixed mindsets holding you back? Identify these areas and work on shifting towards a growth mindset.
The power of mindset is transformative. By understanding and harnessing the principles of mindset, you can improve various aspects of your life, from health and stress management to personal and professional growth. Embrace the strategies discussed in this newsletter, and start cultivating a mindset that empowers you to achieve your goals and overcome challenges.
