TRUMP vs HARRIS: War of the Storytellers (Part Two)

This episode discusses storytelling and logical fallacies used by Donald Trump and Kamala Harris during their respective convention speeches. This is part two of a series on rhetorical techniques used by both candidates.

Storytelling Techniques

  1. Personal Anecdotes
    • Harris shares a story about her mother’s journey from India and another about her best friend, Wanda, who inspired her to become a prosecutor.
    • Trump describes an assassination attempt at his rally and a conversation with a waitress concerned about taxes on her tips.
  2. Emotional Resonance
    • Trump evokes concern and loyalty by detailing the assassination attempt and the crowd’s reaction.
    • Harris connects with audiences through stories of her mother’s resilience and her friend Wanda’s trauma.
  3. Narrative Structure
    • Harris structures her speech with a personal history, professional achievements, and future vision.
    • Trump focuses on suspense and conflict, often framing his narrative as a battle of “us vs. them.”
  4. Relatable Characters
    • Trump uses ordinary Americans, like a Nevada waitress, as central figures in his movement.
    • Harris highlights her childhood community and everyday Americans to emphasize unity and shared values.
  5. Vision of the Future
    • Harris emphasizes a strong middle class, opportunity for all, and reproductive rights.
    • Trump promises national greatness, law and order, and a future free from threats.

Logical Fallacies

  1. Straw Man Fallacy
    • Harris: Simplifies Trump’s actions on January 6th as solely for personal benefit.
    • Trump: Frames Democrats’ actions as purely vindictive and weaponizing the justice system.
  2. False Dilemma
    • Trump: Suggests that only under his leadership will America succeed.
    • Harris: Implies a choice between Trump’s chaos or her stability.
  3. Slippery Slope
    • Harris: Claims Trump’s re-election will lead to authoritarian measures and further restrictions.
    • Trump: Warns that Democratic leadership will destroy the country and bring in criminals.
  4. Ad Hominem
    • Trump: Uses nicknames like “Crazy Nancy” to discredit opponents.
    • Harris: Labels Trump as “unserious” rather than addressing policies directly.
  5. Appeal to Fear
    • Harris: Warns of Trump’s unrestrained power if re-elected.
    • Trump: States the world is on the brink of World War III due to Democrats.
  6. Hasty Generalization
    • Trump: Claims all Democrats are corrupt and the media is fake.
    • Harris: Generalizes Trump’s Supreme Court picks as solely anti-reproductive freedom.
  7. Guilt by Association
    • Harris: Associates Trump with extreme anti-abortion views and initiatives.
    • Trump: Appeals to tradition by emphasizing a return to past American greatness.
