Having travelled the world a number of times and been lucky enough to visit more than 80 countries, I have learned a number of tips which may well come in handy for wannabe travellers and globetrotters.
- Do your research and know how to stay safe, know the dangers and know the best places to eat.
- Start talking to as many people as possible. You have ‘your’ kind of people everywhere on the planet. It is just a matter of finding them.
- Get off the beaten track. Stay safe and explore the real culture.
- Understand why certain cultures have cultural differences and you will respect them more.
- Always say YES.
- Be vigilant but fearless. Most people in every country are good.
- Understand how your country is viewed by wherever you are and be mindful of that.
- Take photos… but make sure you take time to experience everything fully through your senses.
- Write a travel journal. Keep a really good record of your adventures. You will be glad you did.
- Prepare strategies for jet lag and prepare for every flight.
- Keep your possessions organised and safe wherever you go.
- Backup your phone, camera, computer, tablet as often as you can.
- Take whatever medication you need when you need to take it.
- Realise that no matter what, everything will be ok. You could lose everything but everything is replaceable. You will be ok.
- Learn from the people. It is the people who make an adventure magical and memorable.
