School failed us.
So much of what we learned turned out to be useless for most of us. It’s not that we didn’t have well-intentioned teachers or even well-intentioned curriculum creators, it is that we weren’t thinking of how school could prepare us adequately for life.
What gives me plenty of hope is when I hear of schools today that are actively teaching children strategies to master their minds. Kids are learning mindfulness, meditation, stoicism, and even NLP techniques. I love this. It makes me happy. And yet frustrating.
School has always been about knowledge. We memorize. We regurgitate. We learn the ‘facts’ that are presented to us. As a result, we build homogenized perspectives of the world around us. What school has long since taught us is what to think. What we really need to learn is how to think.
In a nutshell, that’s what the main focus of my life’s work is all about. Teaching people how to think. Teaching people how to be more effective at managing their emotions. Teaching them to believe better. I am doing whatever I can to help them learn everything that they were never taught in school.
That’s why I set up the CHANGING MINDS MEMBERSHIP. I wanted to find a way where I could share all of what I have learned over 25 years in the area of psychology and personal change and teach students who were interested not just in the knowledge but in the application of the knowledge to their lives.
When I was in school, I wasn’t interested much in reading. Now, I’m obsessed with it, and not a day goes by without me wishing that I read more when I was younger. There’s nothing I can do about that, but I can do whatever is possible to empower other people who never got the chance to learn how their brain works when they were younger.
Sometimes I see people talking about the ‘School of Life’ and the ‘School of Hard Knocks’ but I believe that we shouldn’t just rely on experience to learn. We should actively partake in the process and seek out what works in how we live our lives.
While there is a lot of nonsense and hyperbole out there in the industry, there are so many incredible teachers with so much wisdom that we can get… we do, indeed, live in an incredible time. But what matters is not just the information we consume, but how we put that information into practice.
